Lilith ☽ – Virgo’s Dark Sister ♍

In preparation for our New Moon in Virgo ♍, the Woman Unto Herselfon September 5th, the sacred wild force of Lilith is making her appearance in our lives as an invitation for us to open to and include the whole of who we are in our new moon self renewal vows.  She is asking us to not just make them to our solar self and bright shadow, which we worked with over the Leo cycle. Lilith’s presence is calling us to include Her… those  aspects of our wild dark feminine which She represents and who we have exiled to the furthest reaches of the shadows in our psyches, our bodies, and society.

Lilith reveals Herself in the waning cycle of the Moon which we are presently in. She lives in the waning Moon cycle in our bodies (blood cycle) as pms and the ‘bitch’ who seeeeeeeeees and expresses uncomfortable truths and desires her aloneness. She lives in the larger waning cycle of a woman’s fertility cycle during peri-menopause and menopause, when Women are fully initiated into her Dark Lilith powers and returned Unto Herself.

Lilith was seen in the display of wild woman sexuality on MTV this week. The outcry over a woman expressing herself sexually while male musicians regularly express their raw sexuality on stage and are not even noted, reveals how exiled Lilith continues to be. The performance was almost a caricature of Lilith rather than her full gnarly erotic expression, as experienced in Lady Gaga’s performances.  A mocking “in your face to the older generation” and its values which so many young people love to do.  Yet the outcry by the status quo is a direct attack on Lilith’s and our own wanton ways.

Lilith is rising as a sacred wild force within my own psyche, adamantly making Her claim for me to take a stance for the sacred wild ways of nature at the cost of serious divide with others:

Our Bodies and Matter, this Earth, are sacred unto themselves without needing a God or Spirit to make them so.  The sacred powers I embody are not sourced from my spiritual nature, other dimensions and ascended masters, but from my soft animal body, my blood, my vagina, my womb, my bones… and the sacred wild forces of the earth, moon, sun, ocean, winds and the wild criaturas who roam.

This is the reclamation of Lilith and the exiled feminine’s reemergence.  And right in the nick of time!  When we realize the sanctity and inescapability of our bodies and earth, we will choose to care for them in the ways that are required for our flourishing.  As long as we think we can escape in an afterlife and that our flesh is worthless and will be dropped at the end anyway, or that the earth is a big mess from which hopefully we have balanced enough karma and don’t have to return to, we will not treat ourselves or the earth with the sanctity which is required to love and protect it.

Even if you don’t believe this, pretend that it is true and watch how differently you begin to respond to your life and to this earth.  The Mysteries of your Body and the sacred wild forces of nature will begin to reveal their secrets to you, and you will find yourself daring to live with a courage you’ve never known in the face of the full catastrophe of Life.

For those unfamiliar with Herstory… Lilith has appeared in many myths. The most often cited is the Hebrew myth of Adam and… Lilith.

She was Adam’s first wife, fashioned out of the same earth as he by Yahweh, the Hebrew god of the Bible. They were made equal in power, yet Adam felt the need to control and demanded Lilith lay beneath him in sex. She refused. He was outraged! And so Lilith left the Garden of Eden to live in the Wilds. Yahweh sent angels to convince her to come home. She would not unless Adam accepted Her power as being equal to his. God knew Adam wouldn’t agree to this, so he made another woman, Eve, this time from the rib of Adam… so she would know her place was beneath him. It is said that the Serpent who returned to “tempt” Eve and bring Adam to his demise was none other than Lilith Herself, returning to Eve (and ultimately Adam) her split off powers of sexuality and embodied wisdom.

Needless to say, this part of the myth didn’t make it in the good book.

Lilith’s earlier appearance is in the Sumerian myth of the Goddess Inanna, first as the Snake and Bird who inhabit the sacred Tree Inanna has her marriage bed made from. And then as the exiled feminine, Ereshkigal, the Dark Sister Goddess of the Underworld, who Inanna must descend to face, submit to and through the Initiation of Death of the identity of her old self, integrate her split off powers.

As many of you know, all myths originate in actual socio-political events. The gods and goddesses reflect whole cultures. Goddesses represent ancient matriarchal cultures, and the Gods, patriarchal warring-conquering cultures (most of them) who overpowered the Goddess cultures.

“The Hebrews came into the Sumerian and Babylonian lands, where the Venusian goddesses Inanna and Astarte were celebrated as the embodiment of love in a sacred marriage ritual between priestesses and kings. In these cultures and as well as in the Celtic culture, it was the goddess who gave the king his power through her love and favors. The religious transition to masculine gods made these love rites blasphemous.

“As the Great Mother-Lover of the goddess-oriented cultures became split into higher/lower, life-giving/death-bringing aspects, sexuality likewise became split: procreative sex was necessary for life, but sensual sexuality was condemned and demonized. Lilith became an image of denied sexual desire, repressed and projected on to woman, who thereby became the seducer.”

(from Black Moon Lilith, by Kelley Hunter)

Yet it is not only our sexual powers which were split off in that myth. Nature’s sacred powers embedded within the human were exiled as well. This was the moment when the sacred was split from matter, named as spirit and made better than it. This was the dramatic moment in human consciousness when we shifted from knowing that the human is sacred unto itself to believing that matter is dark and evil needing God to redeem it and make it sacred. The patriarchal masculine was deified, the feminine, demonized. Lilith was turned into a Demoness. Not just an exiled woman, but the devil herself.

This is the crux of the wound women and men continue to carry today. This wound is revealed in our inherent sense of unworthiness as human beings, our self loathing for our wild instincts, our dissatisfaction and even hatred for our bodies, fear of our own sexual nature, fear of death, fear of the dark forest. It plays out on the socio-political levels as inequality, violence, and the rape of our bodies and our earth.

Many women and men have fought hard to liberate themselves from these social issues. Yet what most do not realize is how subtle this attitude toward the feminine is and how it plays out in the most hidden place: in our mind as our thoughts.

The self hatred and loathing most hold towards themselves is hidden deep within and believed to be one’s own thoughts and rational conclusions. They are not. They were seeded “in the beginning” as the conditioning we inherited from our parents, our ancestry, our culture, and the whole human collective HIStory.

This image reflects the gnarly edged truth of Lilith: Our wild, sexual, and powerful sacred nature, in women and in men, has been brutally crucified and hung on the cross for thousands of years. It continues to be brutalized today.

The greatest act we can alllllllll do to liberate this sacred wild force of nature and support her revolution is to liberate ourselves. To dig down and into the dark recesses of our minds and conditioning, dig down into our shadows and reclaim this exiled One.

You will find Her roaming the edges of your guilt, shame, unsatisfied sexuality, repulsion of your body, rage, terror of the dark earth, animals, wilderness, and loss of the sense of the sacred.  SHE is attempting to break through.  Invite Her in…

Seek Her! Call her Home! She holds some of your greatest powers and wholeness.

  1. Kathleen, this post is so rich and resonates deeply with me. I love the call to embrace the animal/body self. Thank you so much for your wisdom! XO

    • Thank you, love Laura! I soooooo appreciate your presence here, particularly as I see you with strong roots in the sacred wild forces of your nature. I felt it the first time I read your writing. I have witnessed it in your art and movement. Continue to unleash, it my love. For it not only serves you… it serves me/us all. xoxo

  2. I bow to you who embodies love, “Biblical” sacred witnessing and acceptance and profound, deep seeing. Though I believe there is an “unknowable essence”, a “central Orb of the Universe”, sometimes called God who can light us up with all our gifts when mated with — through deep relationship, letting gos of heart errors and mind distractions, and sincerity, I see the paradox in that you don’t believe in “God” (probably the same God I don’t believe in, in whose name so many horrible things have happened and also in whose name so many deeply heroic, amazing things have opened, and civilizations have evolved) and are a person whose gift to others is so sacred, full, embodied and special, standing out in your darks and lights, courage to go anywhere on the spectrum and to go there with me (!!) towering amidst many who believe in God but cannot see others or love them as you do — what can I say! You are a hero/heroine, a sacred altar in my life.

    • Oh my dearest love friend, Claudia. I want to thank you sooooooooo fully for this powerful witnessing and gift of love . Yes, yesssssss thank you sooooooo much for having the sight to understand… “probably the same God I don’t believe in, in whose name so many horrible things have happened and also in whose name so many deeply heroic, amazing things have opened, and civilizations have evolved”… for indeed, that IS the god I am taking my stance against, drawing my line in the sand of LIFE, my life and others due to so much spilled blood, torture, and destruction . The unknowable essence is what I am witnessing as the nature of nature, embedded deep within us all. Perhaps one day we will discover that indeed we are talking about the same thing.
      LOVE!

  3. Wow, love this post. Read and re-read several parts of it. I so appreciate not only the lessons you share that we can take away and apply to our own lives, but also the wonderful pull and history elements. Very profound. Such a gift you give us…

    • Tina! I so feel your presence with me and am witness to your own brilliant sacred wild nature. Thank you for reading and for your loving acknowledgement. I am drinking it in… fully.

  4. I read this as my baby boy, my sweet black cat, my familiar had been missing for 5 nites and 6 days… and just recently found and brought home. I reached the point where I was without hope and a shift occurred in me from which i may never return. All my energies, intentions, focus, and much money was lasered in on everything possible to bring him home. Turning to magic, creating an altar to beckon him home… I received a call from a woman who, with her 2 other crone wise sisters… saying that Hobs was with them in their yard.

Initiated. Me and my boy, both.

It hit me in my weakest points of being. It struck me in that place where my life practice continues to exhibit itself. It showed me the face of Lilith which I have not related to prior… she is woman unto herself… I have been this for longer than long… and, yet, not. In so many aspects of life, yes. In key aspects of my life where I have… not… quite… learned… how… no, I am not woman unto herself.

i read the words scribed here and I see them, take them in, in a very different way. Matter has not been my “issue”. Matter is where I find my comfort and solace. And yet…
There are those aspects of my body, still, that remain in exile. There is the aging and the shifting hormones and the desisting blood flow which are bringing my body to places we have never experienced. I found myself… me, who absolutely LOVES my body and is SO very grateful for all that she allows me to do and be… I found myself feeling a self-hatred towards my body image. Yes, the image that I have not ever had to face as “ugly” or “fat” or uncontrollable.

When I read the words of exile and where do I feel shame and repulsion of my body… I cry out! It strikes so deeply as to rip my chest, my heart wide open.

And, having gone through this experience of my dear sweet boy lost… I came to have to rely on people, reach out to people, ask for help, show my dependence upon others. Vulnerable One. Dependent One. Desperate One.

And, I come to learn this aspect of Lilith. She unto herself. She who has the courage to ask for help, to be vulnerable, to allow others to see her desperation.

This is my life practice. I call upon Lilith to support me in this facet of Her being. I plant the seeds of bolstering the newly experienced initiation… may I not lose this learning.

    • Teresa Herrera, my love… I bow to how ferociously you have been initiated over this last cycle. Upon looking at your chart… I did not know what the outcome was. I saw initiation. I prayed in the fashion that I do, that it would carry you to the edge, but not require you to go over in an ultimate way. No matter our ardency of hearts and sacred ways, Life will continue to initiate us so deeply, and for that we MUST know and deepen in our strength and capacity. As Campbell reflected on… do you have myth which can carry you through the terribleness which Life IS?

Yes… even youuuuuuu… even youuuuuuu.. a woman unto herself like none other I know, your initiating nature found the next edge for your growth, for without that we stop living fully. We must be broken open unto ourselves and the World…. broken open unto our hearts and our humility. We bow. We bow.

And the Woman Unto Herself KNOWS that She is part of the Whole and thus is not an isle without needs… but a Woman who Knows… surrenders… and comes to the hearth of herself, of others… and of the sacred wild nature from which we are alllllll made and beholden to.

I bow, my love. And am sooooooo grateful for your powerFULL sacred wild force of nature and sharing from which we can alllllll be fully touched by and grow.

  5. Wow Kathleen, you are such a wealth of knowledge in the goddess realm, thank you for the quick education!!

  6. Hello Kathleen, my Lilith is 29 scorpio

    • Hi Judy! Well, you indeed have a very dark Lilith with her residing in Scorpio which is the sign of sexuality, death and power. Your work is to reclaim this in yourself which will serve the larger reclamation in the World. xo

  7. Hi there, thanks so much for your info on Lilith. You said that Lilith in in our chart is a wee crescent moon with a cross beneath it… I just had a look at my astrological chart and couldn’t see anything like it… Can you please help?
    Thanks!
    Vicky

    • Vicky… when you have your chart drawn up, or if you draw it up yourself, you have to include Lilith. It is not found in the usual chart which only includes the sun, the moon and the planets. If you go to astro.com you can draw up a chart and include Lilith and the asteroids, which reflect the reemergence of the deeper feminine. I include Chiron, Ceres, Vesta, Pallas Athena and Juno (Roman names for the Greek goddesses). If you have trouble with this, contact me directly at kathleen@kathleenprophet.com with your date of birth, time and place of birth and I will email your chart with Lilith on it.
      Thanks for reading, Vicky.

  8. “You will find Her wherever you feel guilty, ashamed, raw, unsatisfied sexually, repulsed towards your body, rage, terror of the dark earth, animals, wilderness and wherever you are suffering in your sense of self.”

Oh so many places to look for Lilith, Kathleen!

I am miserable when I feel my essential self being fractured by social mores and constraint–I just don’t do well under group think and convention (but you know that). I think Lilith is such a vital force–sexuality=creativity=intrinsic feminine power. She is everywhere and is always trying to be silenced (by the rule-makers). I think it’s time that Lilith comes out and plays 😉

    • hahaha! Yes, Shanna, sooooooooo many places. And yet allllll having the same root in the earth, the body of meeeeee and the body of the Earth.

I hear you… suffering under the weight of the social mores and contraints… and yet more importantly I seeeeeee you rising out of the rubble of these unrealities, using the tension they provide to give shape and definition to YOU! your work! your Tao in the World… and leading us through it. So my love… I indeed seeeeee Lilith as YOU… a force that has indeed come out to PLAY! Love and adore you and your exquisite wild ways, Shanna!

  9. Kathleen, this was a very intriguing post. I’d never heard of Lilith prior to this. Somehow her presence makes sense — as did my “rantings” during PMS (and later-in-life ravings of menopause) when Truth was crying out “don’t negate me” as I apologized for my “unlikely” behavior. Somewhere in the mix was the “real me.” (Lilith?) Loved the Collier rendering… it reminded me of Botticelli’s “Venus Rising.” Remind me to hang that print again to celebrate another side of me — and thank you for your dark, honest musings.

  10. ahhhhhhhhh Kim… YES to the rich wild gnarly tender exquisite hearted sacred wild of YOU! I have been attracted to you from the beginning… because of so much! particularily your deep personal truth which fortifies me… and I know so many. Yes, yessssssss… those rantings brought forth during our pms and menopausal ravings hold such a quintessential JEWEL of the self in them! “don’t negate me” Yes, the Lilith howls into the night, by the lake, in the forest. She is not the only force in our character… yet definitely a force whose time comes in every woman’s life, and I would venture to say, is breaking through into the whole of our humanity now. Thankfully we live in a time and era where she can break through in healthy ways. Thank you for your presence here with me. sooooo much love to youuuuu.

  11. Your posts are always so riveting and so illuminating. I love that you give us permission to dig deep down to the places where we’ll find Lillith. We all have them, but the way you paint the picutre for us, allows us to embrace her (she’s indeed a part of us) rather than supress her. Thank you! btw, I love how you have the moon phase on your site. My daughter LOVES the moon and we follow its phases.
