This event is a Memorial. We are honoring our Ancestors, the Wise Women who died during the Burning Times.
They were the women during the 15th to 18th centuries who were branded ‘witches’.
These women were the wise women of the society. They practiced the wise ways of herbs and healing, the skills of midwifery, were involved in women’s blood mysteries and initiation rites throughout life, and were the enactors of the funerary rites of death. The people loved and trusted them.
The religious political powers sought out these women and gave them the mark of Witch, a sentence of death.
These women knew the power of nature within themselves. It was Sacred. It was Wild. It was Creative. It was Genius. And… they were tortured and murdered for owning it.
This night is held in honor of them. And in honor of all of us who are now reclaiming these Sacred Powers and bringing them back into our lives and into the world.
How to prepare for this ritual and what to gather for your Altar:
The following are only suggestions. Please follow your own intuition and associations to these archetypes. This is about staying with what is meaningful to YOU!
Dress up as a Witch! Let your imagination guide you! PLAY…
Wear clothing that evokes the Wise Woman Witch for you… a shawl, scarves, makeup, face paint! Dress up! the more you bring your imagination in and engage fully, the more powerful of a transformative experience it will be for you!
An Altar is a place to Alter Consciousness – to evoke non-ordinary states of awareness. In our relationship with it, we evoke the Sacred.
It is a place to sit in devotion to things that hold meaning for you personally… the Sacred, as valued uniquely by your own Sacred Wild Creative Genius. Each one’s altar will be unique unto themselves.
For your Altar find items that reflect the season…
Autumn and the Dying time of the year… a black rock, red leaf, rich earth, ocean water, a candle… and prepare a sacred place for them. Always choose what personally calls to you. Find images that evoke the Archetype of dying, destruction, and rebirth. Images of the Goddess Hecate, Queen of the Witches, and Persephone Queen of the Underworld, a photo of you from the past during a particularly challenging time, written or symbolic items of what you want to let go of. Allow your dreams and intuition to guide you.
We are working with specific Archetypes, forces of Nature, in this Samhain Ritual…. the Sun and Moon are in the sign of Scorpio, and the Sun is in a Solar Eclipse.
Death

Candles – black or red (if you don’t have these colors, any will do!)
Rocks – crystals, red and black stones, amber, topaz, garnet, ruby
Water – ocean water if you are near it, otherwise natural or filtered water with sea salt place in it
Earth – a bowl of earth from your garden or a sacred spot outside that you love
Ashes – write down what you want to let go of, and then burn it and place the ashes in a bowl
Plants of this season – Dried Flowers, Autumn leaves, Herbs
Musical instruments... shakers, drums, bells.
Photos of Women you admire… who lived long ago or are living today who represent Wise Women and Witches.
The Embodied Arts: Movement, Art & Writing Materials
We will be doing movement to unleash and embody these forces of nature within and without. Be aware… YOU are Nature. YOU embody these forces of Scorpio, of Transformation, Death & Rebirth. Allow these energies to dance you. Surrender to your Body. She/He knows exactly what to do to unleash and embody these powerful forces of the Self!
Art Materials
After we dance, I will invite you to pull out your art materials. Anything on hand you have will do. From crayons, to colored pencils, to paints, to regular pencils and pens. Use what you have! do NOT use anything that you are going to be worried about. You want to PLAY like a child and be FREE!
Have paper on hand. The larger the better.
Also have your journal or paper and pen on hand. We will be doing stream of consciousness writing, giving these energies a voice. Let THEM speak and write.
You will want to continue to build on your Altar for this whole next month cycle, as this new moon in Scorpio continues to initiate us over the next 28 day moon cycle.
